Tojinbo

東尋坊

Tojinbo is a dramatic stretch of cliffs extending for about one kilometer, formed over a long period of time as volcanic rock was eroded by waves and strong coastal winds. The cliffs are characterized by distinctive columnar joints, a rare geological formation found in only a few places around the world.

Located along the Sea of Japan in Fukui Prefecture, Tojinbo is a place where rugged power and natural beauty exist side by side. For hundreds of years, relentless waves and sea winds have carved the rock, creating sheer cliffs that rise sharply from the ocean, giving the impression that the land itself is standing upright.

The dark blue sea lies directly below the cliffs, and the rock faces display natural geometric patterns shaped by erosion. Standing on the edge of the cliffs, visitors can hear the sound of waves crashing against the rocks and feel the salty sea breeze, experiencing the strength of nature at close range.

Tojinbo is not only geologically significant but also a scenic spot that changes with the seasons. In winter, rough seas and white spray striking the cliffs create a powerful and dramatic scene. On clear days, the contrast between the blue sky and the sea leaves a lasting impression.

For a more immersive experience, a sightseeing boat cruise is recommended. Viewing Tojinbo from the sea offers a completely different perspective from land. In the evening, the setting sun softly illuminates the cliffs and ocean, and the changing light and colors create a quiet and memorable moment.

Tojinbo offers visitors a chance to step away from everyday life and spend time facing the vastness of nature, whether they seek dramatic scenery or a moment of calm reflection.

Nearby, the Echizen Matsushima Aquarium, opened in 1959, provides an opportunity to see marine life from the Sea of Japan up close. Visiting both sites together allows travelers to enjoy the unique appeal of Fukui’s sea and coastline more deeply.
