The Kawada district in Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture, is one of Japan’s leading lacquerware production areas, with a history of more than 1,500 years. Even today, many skilled artisans continue to work here, preserving traditional techniques while creating lacquerware suited to modern lifestyles.
Urushi-no-Sato Hall introduces the history of Echizen lacquerware and its production process in an easy-to-understand way. Visitors can learn each step of the craftsmanship, from shaping the wooden base and applying lacquer to decorative techniques such as maki-e (gold or silver lacquer decoration) and chinkin (gold inlay engraving), gaining a deeper appreciation of Japanese traditional crafts.
The museum shop offers a wide selection of Echizen lacquerware, from practical tableware for everyday use to elegant gifts. Visitors can also enjoy hands-on workshops, including lacquer painting and chinkin decoration, to create their own unique souvenir (advance reservations may be required).
Next to the museum, working studios offer demonstrations by certified traditional craftsmen. Watching these skilled artisans at work provides a rare opportunity to experience not only the finished products but also the craftsmanship and dedication behind them.
Kawada is known as the “Village of Lacquerware,” where the town has developed through a unique division of labor among specialized artisans.

From JR Sabae Station, take the Tsutsuji Bus (Kawada Line) and get off at Urushi-no-Sato Kaikan bus stop. The museum is just a short walk from the bus stop.
