Awara Onsen (Hot springs)

Located in the northern part of Fukui Prefecture, Awara Onsen is one of the region’s best-known hot spring resorts. Since its opening in 1883, it has welcomed many visitors and has long been known as a refined retreat for travelers from the Kansai region.

Awara Onsen is also known for its variety of hot spring sources. Many ryokan, or traditional Japanese inns, have their own hot spring baths, allowing guests to enjoy slightly different qualities of water depending on where they stay. Some ryokan offer private baths, while others have spacious communal baths where visitors can relax in a calm and traditional atmosphere.

The area offers a wide range of accommodations, from luxurious ryokan to modern hotels. Staying at a ryokan is a special Japanese experience, with tatami rooms, futon bedding, warm hospitality, and kaiseki-style dinners prepared with local ingredients. Fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan is one of the highlights of dining in this area.

Awara Onsen Yunomachi Area
This area is good for a relaxed walk, with foot baths, small shops, restaurants, and cafes. Visitors can enjoy the atmosphere of a traditional hot spring town.

Tojinbo Cliffs
A short drive from Awara Onsen, Tojinbo Cliffs offer dramatic views of the Sea of Japan. The rugged rock formations and powerful waves make it one of Fukui’s most famous scenic spots.

Shibamasa World
Shibamasa World is a large amusement park near Awara Onsen. It is especially popular with families and offers various attractions, including pools and rides.

The nearest major station is Awara Onsen Station. Since the extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Fukui Prefecture in 2024, access from the Tokyo metropolitan area has become much more convenient.

How to Get to Awara Onsen

Here are the main ways to get to Awara Onsen.

By Train: Hokuriku Shinkansen

Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Awaraonsen Station.

From Tokyo, it takes about 2.5 to 3 hours.
From Kanazawa, it takes about 30 minutes.
From Tsuruga, it takes about 20 minutes.

From Awaraonsen Station, you have several options to reach the main hot spring area.

By Taxi

There is a taxi stand in front of Awaraonsen Station.
It takes about 10 to 15 minutes by taxi to reach the Awara Onsen hot spring area.

By Bus

You can also take a Keifuku Bus, such as the Tojinbo Line, from Awaraonsen Station.
Some buses stop near the Awara Onsen area, including around Awara Yunomachi.

By Echizen Railway

From Fukui Station, take the Echizen Railway Mikuni Awara Line to Awara Yunomachi Station.

Many ryokan and hotels in the Awara Onsen area are within walking distance from Awara Yunomachi Station, or about 5 minutes by taxi.

By Ryokan Shuttle Bus

Some ryokan offer shuttle bus services from Awaraonsen Station or Awara Yunomachi Station. Please contact your ryokan in advance to check availability and make a reservation. Some ryokan operate shuttle buses only during certain hours.
